NEW YORK, NY (December 1, 2010) – Hit recording artist and entrepreneur Nelly has partnered with leading teen not-for-profit DoSomething.org to launch the 3rd annual “Tackle Hunger” campaign, which encourages teens to take action and fight hunger in their communities.
Hunger in America is on the rise. One out of every four children lives in a food-insecure household.
Each holiday season, DoSomething.org empowers youth to launch their own food drives food in their schools and communities to benefit hungry families. Teens can log on to dosomething.org/tacklehunger and search by zip code for their nearest Feeding America food bank.
“Teens love to give back during the holiday,” says DoSomething.org CEO Nancy Lublin. “This campaign helps them be a part of something big, while still making a difference for hungry families right in their own community.”
In a national Public Service Announcement (PSA), Nelly, who just released his 5th studio album “5.0”, challenges teens to help collect 1 Million pounds of food by December 23rd. As an incentive for youth to get creative in reaching this goal, DoSomething.org will reward the most effective participant with a party for their school and a $1,000 donation to their local food bank.
“You’ve heard me singing about dreams in my new song,” Nelly explains. “For 1 in 7 American households in the US, their dream is just to put enough food on the table to feed their family. Let’s rally together and Do Something about it!”
For this year’s campaign, DoSomething.org joined with Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, to help spread the word about the issue. FeedingAmerica’s Hunger-Free Families initiative encourages people to “TELL 10” friends about families who don’t know where they may find their next meal. . Through the Tackle Hunger website, teens can enter information for 10 of their friends and instantly send them a video about a real family who has struggled with hunger and ways to take action.
“We are so appreciative of this partnership,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America. “It is inspiring to see so many teenagers get involved in not only helping stock pantries in their own communities, but to help raise awareness of hunger in America.”
