Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) This year we've been filming season three of "Pair of Kings." Being on a show is a full time job; I'm there five days a week. I don't get time to audition for other projects. So, when we go on hiatus I get time go out for movies and other guest spots.
Q) What is new this season on "Pair of Kings" and with your character Lanny?
A) Obviously, the big twist is that we have a new king, played by Adam Hicks. It's a big shocker to people because after two seasons of a show that's been established and known with Mitchel Musso. To bring in a new king is a twist for viewers and the cast. Now that we have Adam, the storylines have changed a lot. This season is about Boomer and Baz becoming as good brothers as Boomer and Brady were and in the meantime, there are big challenges and creatures. We have yetis! The big twist this season for Lanny is that the kings find out sometime that I hate them. It's not because of what the viewers think - that I want to be king. They put a spin on it, like it's because I took their banana muffins.
Q) What originally made you want to be a part of the show?
A) That's a great question! I've never gotten that question before. I was going out for hundreds of auditions at one point, but I remember I got the script for "Pair of Kings" when I had just finished working on "iCarly." I thought, "Wow, this is an evil and sinister character." I thought it sounded like it would be a lot of fun. I thought the title was catchy, too. I went into the audition and ended up finding out that Mitchel and Doc [Shaw] were attached to it and thought the show was going to be a hit! It wasn't picked up already to do the full show. It was picked up for a pilot, but I knew from the beginning that when Doc and Mitchel were attached from the beginning it'd be a hit. They are insanely great talents. They know Disney so well that it'd be a great opportunity for me.
Q) What challenges you about playing Lanny?
A) That's a good question, too! It's different because I'm the dark character on the show. This season, they find out in a funny twist that I hate the kings. The twist is that they give me a country! Now, it's like Lanny is a king. I'm still the evil Lanny that people know, but now there is a new side to me. To play the dark character that switches to be a more powerful king is a challenge. It's also that I get to act and bring new character choices to Lanny. I think it helps.
Q) Do you bring any of yourself to this role?
A) Lanny is totally opposite of me! I wish I was a king! Besides the evil and conniving aspect to Lanny - I'm not a schemer like that. I am not a prankster at all. The extreme is probably to be a king and to be king of the King Council. So, I get to bring a little choice to Lanny.
Q) You have great comedic timing. Is it natural for you or did you have to work at it?
A) I was on "iCarly" so to get Nickelodeon timing from Miranda, Jeannette, Nathan and Jerry - they are like professionals. I had little experience and then I went to work with Mitchel and Doc. You have to be on your A game and you have to know what you're doing when you are working with them. I had to pick it up quick. I felt a lot of it was natural though.
Q) When you first started working with the cast was there instant chemistry or did you take some time to bond?
A) It just clicked! It just worked! Mitchel and Doc had a meeting at Disney and they met in the elevator on their way up to the chemistry read. Everyone says, "Whatever you did in that elevator worked!" Adam and Doc now do everything together and are on a vacation together right now! The chemistry between the five of us is just there. It's weird, but it works.
Q) What are some of your favorite moments from filming "Pair of Kings?"
A) It's probably the change. Change is always scary for a lot of people, but I think it's good because we get to show other people that it can happen. Change is good and now a lot of people want to see how we incorporated a new king and the new storylines. I have to give props to the writers because they were so used to Boomer and Brady's relationship. Now they have to go back and do a whole new storyline. Season three is like starting from the beginning. So, props to the writers, cast and everyone who has to make it work to make it seem that Adam is a new brother.
Q) What do you think it is about the show that makes it so popular?
A) I honestly think it's the chemistry that we have. I think it shows on camera. I think everyone knows how much fun we have on set and we want to share that with the viewers. I think on camera the audience knows that this is real.
Q) You take a lot of your time to talk with fans on Twitter. Why is that such an important way for you to communicate with them?
A) It's really because growing up in the business and before I got anything, I dreamed of being on TV and in movies. When I was auditioning, I met a lot of people who I looked up to and it was kind of like they didn't care about their fans. I told myself, "When you become an actor, this is what you want to do. It's not just being on TV, it's taking care of your fans and loving your fans." The support that your fans give you is something you have to give in return. I think the easiest way is responding through Twitter and Facebook. They take time to mention me in a tweet and I feel like I have to show my thanks back. Twitter is easiest. I want to be the role model that people look up to.
Q) Where can people go online to learn more about you?
A) I am always tweeting and I am on Twitter at @ryanochoa. My older brother Ricky is working on a website right now. My brothers Ricky, Robert and Raymond and I are getting into music now. It's a big thing right now that we've been working on. We are musicians now. We love it and a lot of Disney kids are getting into music now. We're working on a website for all of us so we can put out our music. On YouTube my name there is 1CrazyRyRy.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you! Thank you for always being there for me and supporting me. Follow your dreams! If anyone tells you that you can't do something, prove they're wrong! Keep fighting what you believe and what you want to do. Let's try to make 2012 a big year for all of us!
